THE Sydney Morning Herald debates the pros and cons of gambling in Australia and suggests a way of curbing the losses.

The article talks about the use of smart cards in Norway which limit the amount a gambler can lose in a day.

It also makes a valid point on implementing clocks in Casinos to give a ‘more reality, less fantasy’ feel.

Gaming to gambling

ACCORDING to a University of Adelaide survey, teenagers who regularly play video games are more likely to develop tendencies which lead to problem gambling.

Researchers surveyed 2669 teenagers aged between 13 & 17, and found that 56% had gambled in the past year, 2.4% of which became pathological gamblers by the age of 18.

That statistic is higher than the 2.1% of adults who are problem gamblers.

Addicts diverted to gambling

QUITING gambling in Australia has until now been made even harder with addicts who have been looking for help being diverted to a gambling advertisement page.

Problem gamblers who have been looking for website gamblersanonymous.com.au have instead been transfered to a website containing little more than advertisements for Australia’s big betting agencies: Sportsbet, Centrebet, Sportingbet and IASbet.

The darkest side of gambling

HERE is a blog post by Methodist Preacher about the worst outcome of problem gambling.

It has some interesting quotes, including one by Andy Todd; “we have already had people reporting they have increased their gambling during the recession to cover rent, mortgage repayments, food, bills.”
