More money to be made

THE UNITED States could raise nearly US$52 billion in revenue over the next decade by lifting a three-year-old ban on internet gambling and taxing the activity instead, according to a study.

Gambling supporters hope the new analysis prepared by accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers will help propel efforts in Congress this year to repeal the 2006 Unlawful internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

Gaming to gambling

ACCORDING to a University of Adelaide survey, teenagers who regularly play video games are more likely to develop tendencies which lead to problem gambling.

Researchers surveyed 2669 teenagers aged between 13 & 17, and found that 56% had gambled in the past year, 2.4% of which became pathological gamblers by the age of 18.

That statistic is higher than the 2.1% of adults who are problem gamblers.

Help for Invercargill gamblers

GAMBLING help cards have been placed beside Invercargill pokie machines to remind gamblers of their addiction and include phone numbers to call for help.

These cards were placed there by the Nga Kete Matauranga Pounamu Charitable Trust and ILT Foundation.

Currently Invercargill gamblers lose a combined $40,000 a day, with an estimated $14.5 million lost each year.

Addicts diverted to gambling

QUITING gambling in Australia has until now been made even harder with addicts who have been looking for help being diverted to a gambling advertisement page.

Problem gamblers who have been looking for website gamblersanonymous.com.au have instead been transfered to a website containing little more than advertisements for Australia’s big betting agencies: Sportsbet, Centrebet, Sportingbet and IASbet.

The darkest side of gambling

Slot machines bleed out the most

REVENUE to be made from 13,000 future slot machines is part of a balancing act in a budget passed by the Senate for New Hampshire.

The budget is yet to become law but if it does the amount of slot machines is only 980 fewer than two of North America’s largest casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

The reason is simple. Slot machines are more effective at separating players from their money than any other method of gambling.

Smoking ban not to blame

A MISSOURI casino, who believed a smoking ban was the reason behind a drop in revenue, now think the economy is to blame.

According to an article on Casino Gambling Web the casino now has come to the conclusion that the bad state of the economy was behind the 20% revenue drop off  from the first quarter in 2007 to the same period in 2008.
